If you have dark or melanin-rich skin and you've noticed dark spot after a breakout, a rash, or even just using a new product — you're not imagining it. There's a biological reason for dark spots on black skin, and it starts with a cell most people have never heard of.
Dark Spots on Black Skin: Meet the Melanocyte
Melanocytes are specialized cells found in the deepest layer of your skin's epidermis. Their job is to produce melanin — the pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes their color. They do this through a process called melanogenesis, triggered by an enzyme called tyrosinase.
In melanin-rich skin, melanocytes are not more numerous than in lighter skin — but they are more active. They produce larger melanin granules (called melanosomes) and distribute them more densely. This is what gives deeper skin tones their richness and natural UV protection.
But this same biological advantage comes with a vulnerability: when melanocytes are triggered by inflammation, they respond aggressively.

The Inflammation-Pigmentation Connection
Here's the mechanism that most skincare brands don't talk about:
When your skin experiences irritation — from a harsh ingredient, a reaction, or even minor friction — your immune system responds. Inflammatory signals flood the area. One of those signals, through a pathway called NF-κB activation, directly stimulates melanocytes to ramp up melanin production.
The result? A dark spot where the irritation occurred. This is called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH).
PIH is not a scar. It's not damage to the skin structure. It's your melanocytes doing exactly what they're designed to do — responding to a threat. The problem is that in melanin-rich skin, that response is amplified, longer-lasting, and harder to fade.
Where Sulfates Come In
Sulfates — most commonly Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — are surfactants used in cleansers, shampoos, and body washes to create lather. They're effective at removing dirt and oil. They're also effective at removing something you need: your skin's natural lipid barrier.
When the skin barrier is disrupted:
- Moisture escapes (transepidermal water loss increases)
- Irritants and allergens penetrate more easily
- The skin's immune response activates
- Inflammation begins — even when you can't see or feel it
For darker skin tones, this low-grade, chronic inflammation is enough to trigger melanocyte activity. You may not experience visible redness (melanin-rich skin often masks inflammatory redness), but the PIH response is happening beneath the surface. Weeks later, a dark spot appears — and it's traced back to a cleanser you thought was fine.
The Fragrance Problem
Synthetic fragrances are among the most common causes of contact dermatitis — an inflammatory skin reaction — and they're hidden in plain sight. A product labeled "fragrance" or "parfum" can legally contain hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds, many of which are known sensitizers.
For melanin-rich skin, the sequence is the same:
- Fragrance compound contacts skin
- Immune response triggers localized inflammation
- Inflammatory signals activate tyrosinase in nearby melanocytes
- Melanin overproduction begins
- Dark spot forms — often in the exact shape of where the product was applied
This is why people with darker skin tones frequently report dark patches along the jawline (from fragranced moisturizers), on the neck (from perfume), or across the chest (from fragranced body lotions). The product didn't "burn" the skin visibly — but the melanocytes responded as if it had.
Why This Disproportionately Affects Black and Dark Skin
There are two compounding factors:
1. Melanocyte sensitivity. In melanin-rich skin, melanosomes are larger, more numerous per cell, and more reactive to inflammatory signals. The same level of irritation that causes temporary redness in lighter skin can cause months of hyperpigmentation in darker skin.
2. Misdiagnosis and underrepresentation. Dermatology has historically been developed and tested on lighter skin tones. Inflammatory reactions in darker skin often don't present as redness — they present as darkening. This means reactions are frequently missed, misread, or dismissed until the PIH is already established.
The result is that many people with dark skin spend years treating dark spots without ever addressing the root cause: the products triggering the inflammation in the first place.
What to Look For (and What to Avoid)
Avoid:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
- "Fragrance" or "Parfum" on ingredient lists
- Alcohol denat. (drying, barrier-disrupting)
- Synthetic dyes and colorants
Choose instead:
- Gentle, plant-derived surfactants (coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside)
